Greening the Greenway - Pilot
Urban Offsets, the City of Greensboro and Greensboro Beautiful will be joining forces to build the city’s first “community carbon bank”, The carbon credits from this project will help Elon University meet its carbon neutrality goal, part of the university’s Sustainability Master Plan.
Incorporated in 1968, Greensboro Beautiful, Inc. is a nonprofit, 501(c) 3 volunteer organization which partners with the City and citizens of Greensboro to conserve and enhance the beauty and ecology of our community.
This is a two-mile stretch of the Greensboro Greenway, a trail that is found throughout the entire city. This area boarders Wesley Long Hospital, Friendly Shopping Center, and Grimsley High School.
The trees are placed on either side of both entrances and along the top of the hill parallel to the running trail. These trees can be seen from Wesley Long Hospital rooms, and complement their Healing Garden.
This project serves as a proof of concept for the Duke Carbon Offset Initiative's Urban Forestry Carbon Offset Protocol and is one of the first community-based carbon projects in the country.
