Overview

This project is located amongst three sites:

Educational Forest, Maplewood Cemetery and Rest Haven Cemetery are the first projects in Urban Offsets' community carbon bank. A total of 50 trees were planted by city staff in open areas across the three sites, with the majority planted at the Education Forest off of Canal Street East behind Sallie B Howard High School.

Project Owner

Wilson is a city in and the county seat of Wilson County, North Carolina, United States. Situated in the heart of eastern North Carolina, around 40 miles east of the capital city of Raleigh, it lies at the interchange of Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 264 in the state's Coastal Plain region. Wilson had a population of 49,610 in 2012, according to the Census Bureau.

Location

The Educational Forest is a natural area in eastern Wilson complete with nature trails and rose gardens.

Rest Haven Cemetery is an active and growing cemetery in south-eastern Wilson, NC.

Maplewood Cemetery is an active and growing cemetery in northern Wilson, NC.

Planting Site

Education Forest: Project trees can be found in three locations in the Education Forest; just to your right as you enter the Education Forest on Canal Street E; to the right just after the first corner in Canal, and halfway down Canal Street.

Rest Haven Cemetery: Trees can be found along the eastern side of the cemetery just uphill from a creek and natural area bordering the cemetery.

Maplewood Cemetery: Trees were planted in two locations at Maplewood Cemetery; along the driveway inside the NW entrance, and along the NE cemetery property boundary

This project serves as a proof of concept for the Duke Carbon Offset Initiative's Urban Forestry Carbon Offset Protocol and is one of the first community-based carbon projects in the country.
