Arizona State University is a comprehensive public research university, measured not by whom it excludes, but rather by whom is included and how they succeed; advancing research and discovery of public value; and assuming fundamental responsibility for the economic, social, cultural and overall health of the communities it serves. With five campuses in the Phoenix metropolitan area and four regional learning centers throughout Arizona, ASU is the United States' largest public university by enrollment. The 2016 University ratings by U.S. News & World Report rank ASU No. 1 among the Most Innovative Schools in America.
Leading the way in higher education, Arizona State University was an initial signatory of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment in 2007 and has signed the Second Nature Climate Commitment in 2016. ASU seeks to achieve climate neutrality for Scopes 1 and 2 by 2025 and including Scope 3 by 2035.
Arizona State University has been a leader in this space as one of the first supporters of community-based carbon projects. ASU’s University Sustainability Practices office helps coordinate campus sustainability initiatives and oversees the Urban Forestry efforts. ASU is also home to the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability, which advances research, education and business practices for an urbanizing world. Its School of Sustainability, the first of its kind in the U.S., offers transdisciplinary degree programs focused on finding practical solutions to social, economic and environmental challenges.
“One of the most pressing issues facing ASU and the communities around us is urban heat island - the effects of which are about 7-10 times higher than climate change. By partnering with Urban Offsets in 2016, we were able to innovate new ways of supporting urban forestry in Tempe and Phoenix, which reduce the effects of heat island, and reduce ASU’s carbon footprint. It's a win-win for ASU's sustainability strategy and the communities we call home.” - Corey Hawkey (Assistant Director University Sustainability Practices)
