Phoenix is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Arizona. With 1,563,025 people (as of 2015), Phoenix is the sixth most populous city nationwide, the most populous state capital in the United States, and the only state capital with a population of more than one million residents.
In April 2016, Phoenix City Council adopted eight 2050 Environmental Sustainability goals that articulate the community's desired long term environmental outcomes that would fulfill the General Plan aspirations of a Sustainable Desert City. The sustainability report has stated a 2060 goal year for carbon neutrality. Its environmental sustainability goals cover transportation, waste, water stewardship, building & land use, parks, preserves & open spaces, clean air, and local food systems.
